Data stewards, custodians and owners
Data Stewards refer to recognized subject matter experts who work to advance the policies, practices, legislation and culture needed for safe, ethical, transparent and trustworthy data capture, sharing and use. They focus on public benefit, quality and interoperability — and on respect for Indigenous data sovereignty and patient rights.<br/><br/>Data Custodians refer to recognized subject matter experts who are responsible for the safe collection, storage and access of data. Data custodians house and protect the data on behalf of their organization and are tasked with ensuring that the data is securely managed and maintained. The focus of data custodianship is on the technical and operational aspects of data management – on ensuring that data are securely stored, accessible and protected.<br/><br/>Data Owners refer to the individual(s) who have the authority and accountability over a dataset. They are responsible for setting definitions, policies and practice decisions about data within their area of responsibility.
